Future of local post office network debated at Holyrood

Subpostmasters from across Scotland will gather this evening (Tuesday 17th November) at the Scottish Parliament to debate how best public bodies can work with the post office network to improve services for local communities. The event hosted by SNP MSP Christine Grahame will draw together policy makers and representatives from the consumer and business sectors to agree ways in which the post office network can be made more sustainable. Ms Grahame said:

“This is a major event that will examine in detail the challenges facing the post office network, particularly in rural areas such as my own and agree ways in which public bodies such as local authorities and others can work better together with local business and consumer groups to support and help develop post office services.

“The post office network is currently facing extremely challenging times and this is an opportunity for all the relevant interest groups to come together and debate the issues and identify areas which can both safeguard and expand the current level of service. Its about ensuring out post office network is made sustainable.

“At present the post office network provides a vital economic and social service to our communities and I believe there is a determination to ensure it is not eroded any further. I know in my own area in the Scottish Borders where 11 post offices were replaced by a mobile service and one in Peebles completely closed down that the network is under attack.

“I look forward to debating the issues with the panel of invited guests and the audience and identifying the specific areas in which the service can be improved.”
