Parents encouraged to take advantage of “Bookstart” programme

Borders parents are being urged to take part in a region wide programme aimed at encouraging children to read at an early age. “Bookstart” has been running in the Borders for several years and in conjunction with Health Visitors parents of babies and toddlers are given special reading packs as well as taking part in Rhymetimes in  local libraries. SNP MSP Christine Grahame has said the programme has been a success but believes more parents could take advantage of it. Ms Grahame said:

“I would encourage parents and carers in the Borders to take full advantage of this excellent programme.

“I was delighted to find out that Bookstart is encouraging children to read throughout the region from an early age and to discover the excitement and intrigue of books.

“Research shows that babies and toddlers who begin reading from an early age go on to fare much better at school, in all areas of the curriculum. Bookstart gives children the reading start they deserve, in striving for a smarter Scotland.”
